Ashley Bartman

Big Heart = Big Impact

By Raphael Maurice

“It’s heartwarming to hear students recall their fourth-grade year with fondness, regardless of whether I was their teacher. It speaks volumes about the collective spirit of our educators.”

In the heart of Ottawa, Ashley Bartman shines as a beacon for fourth-grade education. Now in her 17th year of teaching, Ashley wears many hats: she is not only a teacher but also the Coordinator of Student Council, Safety Patrol, and Yearbook. Her commitment extends beyond the classroom, touching every facet of the community and ensuring its continual betterment.

Ashley’s dedication to her fourth graders is palpable. “They come to school with such enthusiasm. At this age, they still adore their teachers and are passionate about learning. They haven’t reached the complexities of middle school; they’re in this beautiful phase where friendships are universal,” she reflects. This innocence and eagerness to learn make fourth grade a pivotal year for students, and they are fortunate to have Ashley as their guide.

Ashley’s own path to teaching was inspired by her experiences as a student. “Growing up, I was influenced by incredible teachers. My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Pierce, left a lasting impression on me, eventually guiding me towards a career in education,” she shares. This lineage of inspiration, passed down through generations, underscores the profound impact educators have on their students’ lives.

However, Ashley’s role extends beyond the classroom walls. With her husband coaching high school basketball, she often encounters former students, reminding her of the enduring bonds formed in fourth grade. “It’s heartwarming to hear students recall their fourth-grade year with fondness, regardless of whether I was their teacher. It speaks volumes about the collective spirit of our educators,” Ashley muses.

Life in Ottawa offers a unique blend of small-town charm and communal solidarity. “Jefferson is a remarkable place. The unwavering support from my coworkers and the joy brought by the students affirm my sense of belonging,” Ashley states with conviction. This sense of community is what makes Ottawa exceptional—a town where everyone rallies together, epitomized by a school board driven by a ‘Kids First’ philosophy.

Reflecting on her journey, Ashley considers the wisdom she would impart to her younger self: “The desire for a large circle of friends fades with time. As an adult, it’s the close, dependable relationships, like those I have with my coworkers, that truly matter.” These words of wisdom resonate deeply, reflecting a mature understanding of friendship and support systems.

Ashley Bartman has not only contributed her heart to the Ottawa community but has also helped shape it. Through her dedication, she exemplifies the very essence of teaching: to nurture, inspire, and guide the next generation. “There’s no place I’d rather be,” she concludes, her sentiment echoing the collective heartbeat of a community united in its mission to foster growth, learning, and unwavering support for one another.
