Lori Walker

Making It Happen

By Barry Engelhardt

“I always felt that the perfect job would be in a school. I love kids.”

Lori Walker always dreamed of working within the school system, a place where her passion for education and love for children could thrive. When she confided this dream to a friend, the response was simple yet transformative: “Then apply.” Unlike many who might dismiss such advice, Lori saw it as a call to action. “So, I did,” she says with a laugh, her eyes lighting up as she recalls the moment that redirected her life’s path.

Lori’s career began at Culligan, a good job where she felt valued. “They were very good to me. But I always felt that the perfect job would be in a school. I love kids. The hours are great, aligning well with family life. It’s incredibly family-friendly,” Lori adds.

After a pivotal conversation with her friend, Lori took a decisive step. She printed her resume and hand-delivered “I always felt that the perfect job would be in a school. I love kids.” it to McKinley School one morning. Unsure of what to expect, she was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call that afternoon, inviting her for an interview. Shortly after, Lori accepted a position, eventually becoming an administrative assistant a year later. Reflecting on her time at McKinley, where she worked for over two decades, Lori observes, “The time flew by.”

Lori cherished her role in the educational system, but after two decades, she felt a pull towards new challenges and transitioned to a different position within Ottawa. Initially spending six months in the transportation department, she is now the administrative assistant for the superintendent and school board.

Adjusting to her new role has been an incredible journey for Lori, albeit with its share of challenges. While the position bears similarities to her previous roles, the nature of the work is distinctly different. Previously, Lori’s days were punctuated by a steady stream of interruptions – from ‘band-aids and bellyaches’ to children eager to share stories. These moments, particularly the interactions with students, were often the highlight of her day. “There’s nothing better than a kindergartener,” she says with a knowing grin.

In her current role, Lori finds that interactions with students have been replaced by a broader perspective on the educational system. Working closely with the superintendent and school board has opened her eyes to the intricacies of school management that she hadn’t fully appreciated, despite her extensive experience. “It’s been an eye-opener,” Lori admits. “I didn’t realize the depth of planning involved in everything. From start to finish, every possibility is considered to ensure success.”

Born and raised in Marseilles, Lori takes pride in the school system’s commitment to doing what’s best for the children. “Putting ‘Kids First’ is more than just a slogan on a T-shirt here in Ottawa; it’s a philosophy we live by,” she asserts. Having gained an insider’s view, Lori speaks highly of the school board, a dedicated group of community volunteers who embody the ‘Kids First’ philosophy through their tireless efforts. “If we can help someone, we do. We make it happen,” Lori states matterof-factly.

Lori Walker’s journey is a testament to the power of taking action on one’s dreams. From delivering her resume to McKinley School to playing a pivotal role in the Ottawa school system, her story inspires all who believe in making a difference. As Lori continues to contribute to the educational community, her impact serves as a reminder of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
